Raising Mastiff Puppies- Look At These Tips!

Raising mastiff puppies is really very similar to raising and caring for any other breed of puppy. One of the first things to do once you bring your mastiff puppies home is to begin training your puppies.

Besides training, making sure you incorporate a good exercise routine and playtime with your Mastiff puppies will help to develop a good relationship and keep your puppies healthy.

If you are apprehensive about using discipline while training your Mastiff it can become a little stressful. This might mean you need to seek the help of a professional to help train your puppies.

Keeping your Mastiff healthy will be easier if you provide a good diet, regular grooming, play-time and exercise. Mastiff puppies are fairly active but as they get older, they have been known to become a little lazy. So it is very important to ensure you keep your Mastiff puppies moving as they get older.

One of the best ways to start an exercise routine is to walk your Mastiff puppies daily. Some even recommend walking twice a day. If you can let your Mastiff walk around in the yard or a fenced area, this can also help with their exercise program.  On the other hand if you are limited to an apartment or anywhere without a good sized yard, you may need to make sure you can walk a couple of times a day.

Keeping Mastiff puppies on a good, regular diet will also help them stay healthy. Once Mastiff puppies are separated from their mothers, you should start out feeding them about four times a day. This will ensure they will grow healthy and strong. As they get older, feeding them twice a day is usually what is recommended. Making sure they have a balanced diet is so important.

Mastiffs are really a low maintenance breed when it comes to grooming. You still have some basic grooming to do but you will not have to spend hours a week combing the tangles out of their fur. Since Mastiffs shed naturally, it takes much of the work out when brushing them. But when Spring rolls around, “Watch Out!” A real important point about bathing them is that they have natural oils in their coat that protects their skin. This means you really only need to bathe them about once a month unless you have some special occasion or you are preparing for a show.

Although very large, mastiff puppies are very gentle even as adults. They make wonderful family pets as long as you are a little prepared for their size. They are very loyal and protective of their family. You might want to remember is you have very small children, a full grown Mastiff could accidentally knock them over, although they are generally very conscious of smaller children and other animals.

The Mastiff breed has several different types, so you may want to consider another type of Mastiff if size is the issue.

Some of the most popular besides the English Mastiffs are Bull-mastiffs, Spanish, Neapolitan and Tibetan Mastiffs or the one made famous in “Turner and Hooch,” the Dogue Bordeaux, which is a French Mastiff. If you decide make mastiff puppies part of your home and family, you will not regret it!
